Yeosu · Island walk & camellias

Odongdo & Camellia Train

A compact coastal island reached by a 768 m breakwater, known for its camellia forest, sea paths, lighthouse views, and the little Camellia Train that saves part of the walk.

A considerate tip

“Walk one way if you can: the breakwater and forest paths are part of the experience. Camellias often begin around January and are fullest around March, but bloom timing and train service vary—use the official timetable on the day.”

Getting there
Yeosu-Expo Station (여수엑스포역) is the practical rail reference for Odongdo. Yeocheon Station (여천역) is a different stop, so check the final station before booking. From Yeosu-Expo Station, use a short taxi ride or walk toward the Odongdo entrance; take the Camellia Train or walk across the breakwater.

ODONGDO · WALK & PLAN

Odongdo: combine the forest walk with the sea.

Odongdo is a small island close to central Yeosu, connected to the mainland by a breakwater. You can enter without a boat and combine camellia woodland, coastal rocks and the lighthouse area. Choose a manageable forest loop rather than treating every viewpoint as a required stop.

Island approach

768 m

The breakwater connects the island to the mainland.

Forest paths

About 2.5 km

Choose a section to suit your group.

Standard train fare

KRW 1,000 one way

Island admission is free; the train costs extra.

Suggested visit

1–2 hours

TOURHADA KOREA planning estimate; pace and queues vary.

A simple first-visit walking plan

  1. 1

Entrance → breakwater → central plaza

Yeosu City describes roughly 15 minutes on foot from the entrance parking area. Keep an outer layer accessible for the exposed approach.

  2. 2

Plaza → camellia and bamboo paths → lighthouse area

Use the plaza as a starting point. The uphill paths and stairs near the lighthouse make a shorter out-and-back sensible for children or relatives who prefer less climbing.

  3. 3

    Plaza → entrance

Return on foot or use the train stop by the music fountain. Decide your return time before entering the forest: the outbound last train differs from the inbound service.

When should you visit for camellias?

Yeosu City’s main guide describes flowering from February and a March peak. Temperature and annual weather shift the timing, so check recent local flowering reports if the flowers are your main reason to visit.

Outside flowering season, choose the evergreen woodland, bamboo paths or coastal views according to the walk you want.

Train fares and the route

The published general fare is KRW 1,000 one way; eligible discounted fares are KRW 500. Discounts and exemptions have separate conditions, so bring supporting identification and confirm your eligibility at the ticket office.

The train covers about 1.2 km between the entrance and the stop near the music fountain. It does not circle the island’s forest paths. Walking one way and taking the train the other can work well.

Check both directions of the Dongbaek Train.

These are the city’s first-to-last departure ranges, not continuous service. There is no service 12:00–13:00. Check the actual departure list, queue and operating notice at your stop.

Parking and the entrance address

The city’s Odongdo facilities page lists the first 30 minutes free, then KRW 500 per additional 30 minutes, capped at KRW 5,000 daily for ordinary vehicles. Payment is by credit card. Other nearby car parks may use different tariffs.

Published parking hours are 07:00–22:00 in summer and 07:30–22:00 in winter. Check exit arrangements if returning late. The official visitor address is 222 Odongdo-ro, Yeosu-si; distinguish the entrance from your chosen parking location on the map.

Arriving by rail and combining nearby visits

Check whether your rail ticket ends at Yeosu-Expo or Yeocheon: these are different stations. Look up current bus or taxi directions from your arrival station to the Odongdo entrance, then walk or take the Dongbaek Train.

Jasan Park and Yeosu Maritime Cable Car can be combined with Odongdo. The park is uphill, so distinguish walking access from lift access. Cable-car fares and operating notices are separate from the train.

Families, access and wet weather

The breakwater approach and island forest routes have different demands. Uphill sections and stairs make secure shoes useful. Ask the management office about your chosen route and train boarding if you need stroller or wheelchair access.

Heavy rain can stop the train. The facilities guide schedules the music fountain for March–October and the ground fountain for July–August; rain or strong wind can suspend operation. Check the day’s official notices as well as the weather.

Odongdo questions, answered

Do I need a boat to enter Odongdo?

No. A 768 m breakwater connects it to the mainland; walk across or use the Dongbaek Train.

Does island admission include the train?

Admission is free. The train is separate: KRW 1,000 one way at the general rate, with eligibility-based discounts or exemptions.

How long should I allow?

TOURHADA KOREA suggests 1–2 hours as a flexible first-visit plan. Return walking distance, chosen forest paths, rests and train queues affect the total.

If I miss the train, do I need a boat back?

The breakwater connects to the mainland independently of the train. Check local restrictions and weather, and plan any walk before dark where practical.

Does the CCTV show the whole island?

The linked KBS camera is labelled “여수 오동도 앞”. The operator controls its direction and coverage; it does not guarantee a view of every forest path or the entrance.
